Taking Perfect Pictures

You will work with projects that involve shooting principles such as motion, depth of field, lighting, perspective and composition. Bring your camera to class to experiment and receive accurate instruction. Interact and exchange ideas with your instructor and classmates and be on your way to taking shots that impress.

Get the feedback you need before you send your work out! These sessions will allow participants to show their recent work and talk about their process for up to 15 minutes and benefit from peer feedback and curatorial tips.
Family Documentary

Capture the quiet times and exciting moments in the daily life of your family. Working for 4 weeks, students will learn how to work with the subjects in their daily lives to create strong portraits of people in their own environments. The study and practice of composition and reportage are the main components of this class. Learn how to work quickly and spontaneously to record emotions and moments. Get prepared to take your family's best holiday pictures!
Intro to Studio Photography

In this workshop you will learn about basic studio techniques and how to organize a studio-like environment in your home. You will learn about backdrops, lighting and camera settings appropriate to studio shoots. The instructor will also talk about how to create dynamic studio pictures and develop your personal style as a photographer.

Learn how to create photographic prints without a camera or even a negative using only everyday objects and photo sensitive paper. This is a very old and fun technique that allows you to print silhouettes of objects to create a photo impression. Students will experiment different objects and see how texture, position and exposure influence the printed image. This workshop includes an artistic and historic survey of photogram pictures from artists such as Man Ray, Picasso and Moholy Nagy.

Photoshop CS Individual Instruction for Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced

In this class you will be paired with an instructor who will teach you how upload and edit your pictures in Photoshop. You will have a one-on-one experience with an instructor who will develop his/her curriculum around your needs and level of digital knowledge. Topics covered will include using basic tools in Photoshop like burning and dodging, color correcting and using the layers palette.
Learn basic to expert editing techniques using Photoshop that will improve your technical and creative skill, make smooth composites using layers, and retouch challenging subjects to make them look seamless. Bring in images on disc to edit, collage and finalize in class.
Adobe Photoshop Elements Demonstration

In this class you will have a brief overview of Adobe Photoshop Elements and a demonstration of the Software's capabilities. Learn when and how to use the available tools to store, edit and share your pictures. Ask questions about your personal usage of Adobe Photoshop Elements and finally get use of all of those photos sitting on your hard drive.

Know your 35mm Camera

This workshop will help you understand how your manual 35mm camera works. You will work with basic camera body and lens elements. Learn how to properly utilize your camera's shutter and aperture to affect motion and depth of field. Bring in your camera to practice shooting, loading film, and learning flash elements.
Medium Format Holga (plastic) Camera

Holga cameras are inexpensive plastic medium format 120 film cameras. Photographs made from Holga cameras and lenses create otherworldly images. These two weeks experimentation workshop with this form will help you unblock your creativity or learn to see in a new way. Panoramas, long narrative strips, multiple exposures… The creative possibilities are endless. This class is also a good introduction to medium format film and printing techniques! Introduction to B&W Photography: Shoot, Develop, Print

In this class you learn how to use your 35mm camera to take aesthetically and conceptually solid pictures. You will complete assigned shooting projects and develop your own black and white negatives in our darkroom. You will also learn the basics of printing in the black and white darkroom and come away with developed rolls and finished prints.
Intermediate Darkroom

In this class you will work mainly in the darkroom on technical and aesthetic issues. You will improve your craft and start to develop a personal style. You may experiment with different types of paper and developing techniques to further enhance your prints. This class is for students with previous darkroom experience. Students will show their work in a final exhibition at the end of the class.

Polarizing your Prints

This workshop will explore the technique popularly used by Man Ray. In this workshop students will come prepared with negatives to enlarge and learn the technique of polarizing their prints in the darkroom during development. Students should have basic black and white darkroom experience.

Pinhole Photography Workshop (9-15 years of ages)

This weekend long workshop will focus on pinhole photography. Students will build their own camera out of everyday materials and learn to make contact prints and use chemicals in the darkroom. A great class for beginners and a fun class for those looking to experiment with pinhole photography! (We will have an adult Pinhole Photography class on our January schedule.)

Darkroom Printing with Your Child

This class will bring you into the darkroom for the very first time with your child. In class you will learn how to enlarge and develop images with and without a negative. You and your child will create a small series of personalized black and white images to take home with you from class. Please bring in a pair of rags, protective goggles or eyeglasses, rubber gloves and a smock to protect your clothing.
