Thank You

I want to personally thank everyone who attended our grand opening events! Please continue to join us as members of YO and take the initiative to start up or host your own clubs, join classes and workshops at the space.
We are extending our $25.- membership for the summer! Stop by during business hours to sign up or go to our website.
Our group darkroom is ready for you to rent and use, so start booking time now. Thanks to volunteer Tim Bowman for getting us up and running smoothly.
Again, classes will start up July 27th so now is the time to sign up for your favorites before they are booked.
Don't see a class that fits you? Tell us and we will try to work it in to a future schedule. Because YO is still growing we really thrive from the input of members and visitors to keep us functioning as a place by and for the community.

Photo Space

I just posted a fresh new myspace for us! Though I'm no technology wiz it was pretty easy to get going. If you're a member and want a forum to interact with other people who are psyched on photography we can use the space to get that moving for you.

Plastic Critters and Suture Landscapes

"Treed Kitty" by Susan Arthur-Whitson

In a majority of her photographs on display at "YO" Susan uses little plastic animals as protagonists of her visual narratives. She allows these (often realistic) creatures to guide her to a particular shooting location which, based on existing lighting and shadows, leads the viewer to notice an environment of mystery and imaginative possibilities. Susan's saturated colors result from "conventional in camera effects" used to manipulate the scene. In her own words, Susan says she fuses "the real world with my imagination, I create places to visit that didn’t exist before. I like to think that these are unique places hiding in plain sight." You will notice her larger "animal" and lansdcape prints to be visual roadmaps of frozen memories and living environments that reflect a vision of life from an ant's or child's point of view. Susan's photographs give life to inanimate objects and dare the viewer to relive and reinvent memories of playing with toys and creating world's hidden "in plain sight". Susan's photographs will go on display June15 and are for sale. Opening reception at Yo Gallery 113 N. 23rd St., Phila. June15 @ 6pm

Our spacious and bright gallery is a great way to expose your work to the local arts community. If accepted, you will get great exposure for and create a dialogue around your work at one of our many opening receptions.

This year Yo Gallery is excited to be on the Philadelphia Open Studio Tours (Oct. '07). Come support your

"Yo!" Opens!

Yes the time has come...Yo Darkroom will be in full swing by June 27! We are in fact a fully functioning, safe and spacious traditional b+w darkroom. So bring out those 35mm and Holga cameras and step back in to the magical darkroom world. If you have never gone in that direction before, what better way to learn the basics of how a manual camera works and what brought so many people into this field in the first place. Learning or improving these skills can only inspire and motivate you further with other projects (including digital). We are hosting skilled instructors, local photographers and master professionals who will be available for classes, workshops and gallery events each month. The darkroom and I are here to support you...so let us know how we're doing and what else you would like to see.
